Desso Sports Systems‘ GrassMaster system is being installed at Singapore Sports Hub‘s National Stadium, a venue in Asia that will play host to soccer, rugby, cricket and other athletics.

The National Stadium, which holds 55,000 seats and has a retractable roof, is installing Desso’s 100 percent natural ryegrass and bluegrass surface. Artificial fibers are injected 18 centimeters deep, every two centimeters across, which result in about 20 million artificial fibers reinforcing the natural grass and anchoring the field.

The National Stadium is a part of the “sports, lifestyle and entertainment ecosystem,” which includes an indoor aquatic center, indoor stadium, outdoor water sports center and a retail mall as well as an arena for badminton, fencing, silat, wushu and ping-pong.

This system is also used in London’s Wembley Stadium and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil’s Arena de Sao Paulo.

“Supplying the pitch for the Singapore Sports Hub is obviously a prestigious project for our company and hopefully an inspiration for other multi-functional stadiums. With the Desso GrassMaster system, we enable stadiums to combine sports and events in the same location, without compromising on the grass pitch,” says Alexander Collot d’Escury, Desso’s CEO. “The project is an excellent example of Desso’s continued growth strategy for both our carpet (turf) and sports business in Asia.”

The first test event to be held at the National Stadium will be the Rugby World Club Challenge in June.

“The pitch forms an integral part of the National Stadium and the Desso GrassMaster system truly does justice to what will be one of the most innovative sports stadiums in the world,” says Sports Hub’s CEO, Philippe Collin Delavaud.
