The color was chosen for Gilchrist Field, which is located inside Portage Community Bank Stadium, because blue is the football team’s primary color.

Ravenna school officials had to contact Boise State to secure a waiver on the trademark blue turf, however. The college has had a blue playing surface since 1986, and is very protective of its trademark “Blue Turf.”

The unusual color is generating attention. A local news outlet conducted a poll to gauge the community’s reaction. It also debunked such myths as birds mistaking the sports turf for water, players’ jerseys blending in to the field, and the school’s eligibility with the state athletic association.

Other changes included in Ravenna High School’s $1.1 million stadium renovation project are a renovated track surface and tennis courts as well as a new stadium scoreboard.
