Project EverGreen revitalizes Milan Park in Detroit

Milan Park in Detroit’s Evergreen Outer Drive neighborhood has undergone a significant transformation, thanks to a collaborative effort led by Project EverGreen, the City of Detroit, the Gilbert Family Foundation and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
Milan Park has long served as a gathering spot for families in the community. The recent upgrades include new recreational facilities, environmental enhancements and creative touches that reflect the spirit of the neighborhood.
The $750,000 overhaul brought several key enhancements to Milan Park:
- 60 newly planted or relocated trees to improve air quality and shade coverage
- A second playground and a renovated natural grass soccer field
- New combination soccer/football goals and a revamped softball field
- Upgraded walkways, fitness equipment, picnic tables, and BBQ grills
- A new entrance off Evergreen Road for easier access
- Sidewalk murals by local artist Miranda Kyle, featuring lemon trees chosen by the community
According to Project EverGreen’s executive director Cindy Code, the park’s turf and trees will sequester over 351,000 pounds of carbon annually while generating more than 530,000 cubic yards of clean air—the equivalent of removing 45 cars from the road each year.
Crystal Perkins, Director of Detroit’s General Services Department, emphasized the city’s commitment to improving outdoor spaces: “The City of Detroit’s investment in this beautiful park highlights our commitment to providing up-to-date and safe outdoor spaces.”
This marks Project EverGreen’s fifth GreenCare for Communities project in Detroit since 2017. With additional park improvement projects planned for 2025 and beyond, Milan Park is a model for collaborative efforts to enhance urban green spaces while fostering community pride.
