PGMS certification recognized by VA Dept. of Education

The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has announced their Certified Grounds Technician (CGT) certification has been recognized by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

CGT certification is now available to qualifying Virginia high school students and its recognition by the state encourages more students to pursue green industry employment opportunities by testing skills necessary to the grounds maintenance field.

According to Jimmy Viars, Certified Grounds Manager, “The significance of the CGT being approved by the VDOE is twofold. First, our industry is opening a door allowing students that have completed a two-year path of either Landscaping 1 and 2, Horticulture Science or Turfgrass Management the chance to earn a nationally recognized grounds technician certification. Second, this opportunity will bring forth new employees that are better trained, and more equipped to do the jobs that we need them to perform. This level of competency will put a new hire head and shoulders above any laborer with no training. This is the true meaning of a win-win. Students that have no plans for college will have an advanced path to a great career in the green industry and the green industry will get higher-qualified employees.”

Viars was instrumental in introducing the certification to the Department of Education and assisted the Office of Career and Technical Adult Education, VDOE by participating on the curriculum development and review committee.

The CGT exam consists of 40 questions on the overall grounds maintenance field and 10 questions specific to the candidate’s region. Each candidate is provided an outline to help aid in their preparation for the exam. A minimum passing score of 70 percent is required for certification and CGTs must submit 30 continuing education units every five years to maintain their certification.
